I came across an old news article about Mike and the Catholic Church dated 6 February 2006, as follows:
Pop superstar Michael Jackson has been asked by the Roman Catholic Church to set the prayers of the late Pope John Paul II to music. The 47-year-old singer was chosen to write music for the 24 prayers and chants, after Vatican officials decided this global celebrity would best promote their holy message.
Father Guiseppe Moscati says, "We have the rights for the 24 prayers written by Pope John Paul. We had hoped the fact that we have been in contact with Michael Jackson would remain a secret. But sadly it has leaked out ahead of time. We are in discussions and trying to sort it out."
The priest, who is head of the Millennium Music Society, insisted Jackson's hard-won battle against child molestation charges did not discount him as a candidate. He adds, "He was cleared and found not guilty by a jury. Michael Jackson is very interested in this project - we shall see what happens."
(I wonder what happened to this project. There was a rumor that Mike converted to Catholicism before he died, although I doubt this is true.)
Another piece of news I found was Mike's nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998, along with Pope John Paul and Bill Clinton.
Pope John Paul now has a Facebook page dedicated to his upcoming beatification as a saint on May 1, 2011.

WOW Beth, this is incredible news if it's true! Can you please find the article, and post the link? Then I can do some further research if possible. Or send me a PM, thanks!

I just saw a news item from Raymone Baine in February 2006 debunking this, so it's not true.

Okay Beth, thanks for that info. I'm moving this thread under Fact Check. I'm reproducing below the article I found on the MJEOL website. "There have been a spate of erroneous Jackson reports after his full acquittal; everything from him selling both the ATV catalog and Neverland, to him recently being in Italy to sign a contract with the Vatican to sing prayers for the late Pope John Paul II. The latter story was discredited recently by Jackson spokesperson Raymone Bain who released the following: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Raymone K. Bain February 6, 2006 MICHAEL JACKSON NOT IN DISCUSSIONS REGARDING POPE JOHN PAUL II'S PRAYERS Washington, D.C.
.. Contrary to published reports in Italy, and the United States, Michael Jackson has not participated in any discussions with the Vatican, or Edizioni Musicali Terzo Millennio, an Italian music label specializing in religious songs, to record music to Pope John Paul IIs prayers. None of Mr. Jacksons authorized representatives have contacted either the Vatican, or Edizioni Musicali Terzo Millennio, regarding this proposed project. Michael Jackson is unaware of this project, and news reports stating otherwise are completely erroneous. ### Source: Raymone K Bain"

You're very welcome Mal. There is so much stuff out there that seem to be genuine but later turn out to be bogus that I sometimes get a headache, as I'm a serious researcher. When it comes to Mike, it's so difficult to differentiate fiction from non-fiction.

Yes unfortunately, a lot of that is going around. A lot of misinformation which is taken as fact by so many, and if it's bad news or a diss against Michael, blown way out of proportion. It's sad to see, so that's why I started the Fact Check board in the first place.
