I've been holding off giving my opinion for a long time now on whether Michael was an addict or not. It amazes me that this is such an extremely touchy subject with so many fans. Fans have attacked each other with the slightest mention that Michael used drugs, and with Murray's trial looming, the conversation has gotten a lot more intense.
Here is my take on it:
First, fans should become better informed about addiction before they criticize others for their beliefs. They need to understand that when someone is a drug addict, it doesn't mean that they are currently using drugs. All it means is that there was a period during their lifetime that they abused drugs. It not only became a habit (psychological) but their body craved it. Even if they eventually kicked their habit through rehab or whatever other means, they will always and forever be considered an addict, because their vice is that much easier to return back to.
We've all heard of addicts going to rehab to kick their addiction, or try to. It's not easy, as you've seen by watching shows like Dr. Drew's Celebrity Rehab. Just like alcoholics who stopped drinking long ago, they will always be considered alcoholics, and they are the first to admit that themselves! Same as ex-smokers... they will only be considered ex-smokers until their next drag! We all know people with addictive personalities, from shoppers to gamblers to hoarders. It's so easy for them to start but so HARD for them to stop once they're addicted!
So the truth about Michael? Yes, he was a drug addict. He became addicted to prescription pain killers after the terrible Pepsi commercial accident. Elizabeth Taylor even confirmed that he had checked into a UK rehab facility. This is common knowledge. It's also widely known that he sometimes used demorol, morphine and other drugs, maybe because he liked the way they made him feel. Maybe he liked the unnatural highs and had brilliant flashes of creativity when he took them... who knows? I notice that no one ever wants to discuss the origin of Michael's song "Morphine" but it's always been pretty obvious to me.
So yes, Michael took drugs. That is the truth and it's been well documented, no matter how much fans would like to deny it or say it isn't so. Some fans would love to re-write history, but that's impossible. They think that anyone who mentions Michael's previous addiction is bashing him, but they should realize that the correct term is being used, and is in no way meant to sully Michael's good character.
Being addicted to drugs did NOT make Michael a bad person! And it doesn't mean that he was using or abusing prescription drugs before he died either! I truly believe Michael had stopped taking drugs long before, especially because he knew he'd have to be in top form for his upcoming concert tour. As we all know from the toxicology reports, there were NO prescription drugs in his system, except for the drugs that Murray administered. And Propofol is NOT an addictive drug. It is an anesthetic, used to put patients to sleep for surgery. Sleep is actually the wrong word here... it's used to "knock out" patients for surgery.
So Michael was "clean" and not using prescription drugs when he died, and that truth will come out in court. But of course, Murray's defense team will play the "drug addict" card over and over again, trying to sway the jury to side with Murray. And of course the media will take advantage of that and constantly mention it too. THIS is what we fans have all been so worried and upset about, but trust me that the Prosecution has an excellent case, the jury will see through Murray's weak defense, and justice will be done.
I'd love to hear if you agree or disagree. Please keep your comments civil, thanks.
Justice for Michael!
