Yeah, that is so hard. It's very painful to hear those things about Michael and to know that people actually believe it. Here's what helps me: WWMD?
I remind myself that they are seeing the surface of things. This appears to be very obvious to them and they don't understand why those who are devoted to Michael can't see it. They are seeing the illusion and it appears very real to them.
I also remind myself that people who would never do such a thing (make a false accusation) for something as stupid as money, have a difficult time seeing or believing that there are those who would and did. The concept of ruining someone's life to get money is so foreign to most people, that they can't conceive of doing such a thing. Therefore, they have trouble seeing it when it happens.
Some people view Michael's life through the eyes of their own inner abused child, and this colors their perceptions. Some people view Michael's life through the eyes of jealousy, and this colors their perceptions. Some people view Michael's life through the eyes of innocence and purity, and this colors their perceptions (i.e. they can't see why someone would lie because they would not).
Some people view Michael's life through the eyes of love and compassion, and they see the truth.
When we choose to view others through the eyes of love and compassion, the same way we look at Michael, a different picture of them, their perceptions, and their words appears before us.
Allowing ourselves to experience compassion for those who look at Michael's life with any eyes other than those of love, our own feelings about what they see and say dissipates a bit. Each time we do this, it dissipates a little more.
If we can't find it in our hearts to extend love, compassion and forgiveness for their sake, we can at least do it for our own sake in order to end our own pain. While that may sound selfish, it's actually a step in the process. Because once our own pain ends, we don't react to others in the same way, and then it becomes possible to extend love, compassion, and forgiveness to others for their sake.
Since this is your mom, no doubt it will be easier for you to look at her through the eyes of love, compassion, and forgiveness. It is much harder to do with people we have no emotional bond with. But it's no less important.
Hmmm...I think I just solved my own problem with the Rabbi
I love it when that happens
